Red Carpet Week in San Francisco 2016 Starts with Queen Sugar
It happens every September in San Francisco, a week filled with red carpet style openings. This year, OWN’s new television series Queen Sugar set the stage for the red carpet week. Author Natalie Baszile and the Mural, Music and Arts Project hosted the Queen Sugar series premiere event at the Fillmore Heritage Theater on Tuesday, September 6th. The next night, Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony opened their season with a red carpet style gala. On Friday, Mathew Shilvock celebrated his first San Francisco Opera opening night as its director. On Saturday, Shilvock and San Francisco Opera presented the world premiere opera Dream of the Red Chamber.
The Mural, Music and Arts Project Author’s Screening of Queen Sugar featured not only the premier episode, but also a conversation between author Natalie Baszile and writer Sarah Manyika. The two discussed Baszile’s award-winning novel that inspired the series, as well as the book’s journey from Natalie’s hands to Oprah’s desk. The Author’s Screening provided a unique opportunity for San Francisco’s cultural, art, and literary communities to meet Natalie Baszile and celebrate Oprah Winfrey’s acclaimed new series.
