California is a land that both breeds and inspires artists of every genre, and our fashion world is no exception. Vasily Vein, a Russian-born fashion artist who relocated here, offers exquisite, handmade dresses and gowns fit for a red carpet anywhere. Though the red carpet scene in San Francisco is rich, it is not always easy for local fashion designers to thrive. Like any profession, the competition is fierce. Gowns by Vasily Vein stand out and stand up next to top designers like Chanel, Valentino, and Giambattista Valli. What is incredible, to me, is that he sews each creation by himself in a tiny studio in his Sausalito apartment.
Vein works individually with each client, listening carefully to her preferences in fabric, cut, and the details of the occasion. He then offers sketches, shares swatches, and proceeds to create a one-of-a-kind solution. I experienced his workflow prior to the opening night at San Francisco Symphony earlier this year. The entire process took three weeks. I could not be happier with the results (see photo below).
Vasily Vein’s latest collection, inspired by old Hollywood movies and classical music, made its debut at the University Club in San Francisco on November 17th, and at the Hilton in San Jose on December 1st. Scenes from the events:
