Scenes from Mark Calvano’s Studio 54 Party in San Francisco:
A Studio 54 themed birthday party for Mark Calvano and Carolyne Zinko at the Bently Reserve in San Francisco. People in this video (by order of appearance): Marybeth La Motte, Mark Calvano, Carolyne Zinko, Lacey Rey, Craig Lipton, Teagan Squires, Kimberly Givsan, Joel Goodrich, Sylvia Rubin, fashion editor, San Francisco Chronicle, Daru Kawakalski, Lisa Alexander and Elizabeth Touw.
I noticed three themes at the best parties around the Bay Area this summer — Gatsby, Studio 54, and The White Party.
Scenes from Studio 54 with Mark Calvano:
- Studio 54, the infamous club named for its street address in New York City, notorious for the extravagant and self-indulgent pleasures celebrities and beautiful people experienced within its walls. Folks like Bianca and Mick Jagger, Diana Vreeland, Ivana and Donald Trump, Liza Minnelli, and Jerry Hall flocked to the Studio 54 opening party in May 1977. Mark Calvano hosted a fabulous Studio 54 themed summer birthday party with Carolyne Zinko at the Starlight Room atop the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in July (watch the video above).
- The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, chronicled the money, opulence, and exuberance of America in 1922. The economy soared; World War I had ended and wild and extravagant living were the order of the day. An underground culture of revelry thrived thanks to Prohibition’s ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol. Gina Milano’s Great Gatsby Meets the Great Depression themed birthday party at Le Club exemplified the mood in San Francisco today.
- The White Party — Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puff or Diddy, held a celebrity-filled, notorious white party in The Hamptons, summer 2003. Wearing white from head to toe at Puff’s now annual event is strictly enforced. Since then, white parties, where guests are asked to wear all white, have become popular at nightclubs and events around the world. Kimberly Bakker’s 40th birthday this summer followed the white party tradition.
