Donna Karan San Francisco Fall 2009

Strong shoulders equal narrow hips, the illusion works for eveningwear too

In 1984, with her first namesake collection, Donna Karan offered women a metropolitan, casual chic alternative to power dressing. Her fashion empire was built on stretch wool jersey with thoughtful draping in simple, body conscious and elegant style. On June 10, 2009, 75 women in San Francisco joined Donna Karan and Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus fashion director, for a presentation of the Donna Karan autumn and winter 2009-10 collection.

Some 24 years after her start, Karan still recommends power dressing in a sensual way. Her strong, yet soft shoulder tops paired with long, lean bottoms (big shoulders equal narrow hips) are a go-to for business and cocktails. Her signature draping still accentuats the postive, and the shoulder pads are back to reflect how much we still carry on them. Her clothes are still feminine and sexy, for powerful women.
