San Francisco Ballet opened its 80th season on January 24, 2013, with a gala themed "Moving the Compass -- bridging the globe through the universal language of dance." Guests were greeted at City Hall by African drummers, where the global theme was carried out with a richly hued color palette and the projection of ornate compasses in the grand dome, and where San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary held three black-tie fundraising dinners prior to the performance.

Onstage at the War Memorial Opera House, Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson showcased the company's versatility and range with eleven classic and contemporary works and excerpts. The performance was followed by late-night dining, dancing and a flash-mob at City Hall.
