Jim Campbell became the 13th named Bay Area Treasure by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's (SFMOMA) Modern Art Council (MAC) at a reception and dinner in his honor on October 23, 2012. A champagne toast was held in the museum's Haas Atrium beneath the artist's commissioned Exploded Views, a large scale cinematic sculpture composed of 2,880 flickering LED lights that mesmerized viewers since its installation in 2011. Exploded Views was taken down the next day to make room for a new installation, but SFMOMA director Neal Benezra announced that MAC's contributions allowed the museum to purchase the piece for its permanent media arts collection, ensuring audiences will continue to enjoy it at the museum long into the future.
