Each summer, San Francisco becomes a place where dreams come true for the young artists in the Merola Opera Program. Out of hundreds of young hopefuls who audition, approximately 23 singers, five apprentice coaches, and one apprentice stage director are chosen to participate in the Program. Merola is dedicated to seeking out the finest young opera talent and helping them develop into professional artists of the highest caliber. This is supported by a vibrant community of opera lovers devoted to nurturing tomorrow’s finest operatic talent.

La Serva Padrona (The Servant Turned Mistress) is a comic opera by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi with relatable characters in the form of a cunning young maid and her aging master.

Sāvitri, music composed by Gustav Holst, is from the Mahābhārata, one of the great epics of ancient India, focused on the tale of Death outsmarted by a young woman.

The Bear, opera by William Walton, in which a widow faithful to the memory of her late husband finds unexpected love.

Merola Grand Finale Summer 2017 @ War Memorial Hall Opera House

Merola Opera Program presents the Schwabacher Summer ConcertCelebrate with the 2017 Merola young artists one last time before they head out to dazzle audiences around the world! The Merola Grand Finale is an exciting evening at the War Memorial Opera House, featuring scenes from some of the opera’s most thrilling moments.

7:30 pm Performance (Program and casting to be announced at a later date) at the War Memorial Opera House

10:30 pm Post-performance reception with the artists at the War Memorial Veterans Building in the Green Room. A separate ticket ($75) is required for admission to the reception. For reception tickets, please call the San Francisco Opera Box Office at (415) 864-3330.

YoYo Ma, San Francisco Symphony Opening Night Gala 2017San Francisco Symphony’s 2017-2018 season will celebrate the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, one of the greatest composers, conductors, and educators of the 20th century. The season kicks off with an Opening Night Gala featuring superstar YoYo Ma with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Symphony Orchestra performing two beloved works. All opening night concertgoers are invited to continue the celebration at the After-Party, which includes cocktails, live music, and dancing.
