Style Focus: Deepa Pakianathan
San Francisco style – what is it? RedCarpetSF zeros in on individuals and their unique fashion preferences

Style-at-a-glance: Deepa is a wife and mother of two boys, holds a Ph. D. with a background in banking and biotech and a partner in a top Bay Area venture capital firm. Deepa's diverse talents and background coupled with her bold fashion sense depict San Francisco style. When it comes to fashion, Deepa recommends pushing the envelope and prefers to wear the unexpected

Current favorite designers: Donna Karan, Pamela Roland, Zang Toi

Beauty regime: Deepa’s skin is practically flawless with no lines, and she uses very little Yves Saint Laurent makeup over Oil of Olay moisturizer and sunscreen

Summer 2009: Deepa is wearing brightly colored short dresses, or skirts with white shirts. For the office, she adds a jacket or a shrug

Fragrance: Stella McCartney in the summer

Accessories: Deepa makes most of her own jewelry, and likes unique, vintage belts, some of which she has made into bracelets

Shoes: Flat sandals or towering platform heels, depending on the occasion

Chefs & Vintners for Meals on Wheels

May 17, 2009: Boulevard’s Nancy Oakes returned for a sixth year to lead one of the most illustrious line-ups of culinary superstars in Northern California, an extraordinarily generous group of 80 dedicated chefs and restaurants, to provide and prepare the entire menu for a benefit for Meals On Wheels of San Francisco.

The event raised more than $1.1 million, enough to provide approximately 220,000 meals for the Bay Area's homebound senior citizens. 78 of California’s leading vintners including Hanzell Vineyards, Duckhorn Vineyards, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Peay Vineyards and Vineyard 29, poured and paired their best vintages throughout the evening, and helped raise one third of the funds Meals on Wheels needs each year.

Meals On Wheels of San Francisco is the oldest and largest meal delivery service for homebound seniors in San Francisco, and is committed to the belief that all seniors have the right to live independently with dignity and respect for as long as it is safely possible. Its mission is to provide isolated homebound seniors in San Francisco with nutritious meals, daily human contact and supportive services to prevent their premature institutionalization. To donate, volunteer or get more information, visit www.mowsf.org.

Peninsula Fashion & Philanthropy

May 20, 2009: Nearly 400 women turned up at a private residence in Hillsborough, CA, to support Parca Auxiliary and to enjoy Cirque de Mai, its 21st annual spring fashion show and lunch. Guests sat beneath an elegant white canopy at whimsically themed tables decorated with brightly colored linens and circus animal topiaries, while perusing fashions from local shops including designer Trina Turk, who recently opened a boutique on Burlingame Avenue.

Cirque de Mai raised over $140,000 for Parca Organization, a private, nonprofit association that serves people with developmental disabilities and their families in the Bay Area. For more information about Parca, please visit www.parca.org.

Fashionable Alley Scenes

Luxurious settings attract fashionable people at Bix and Gitane, two restaurants located in San Francisco alleyways.

Bix, located on Gold Street near Jackson Square, has a dark wooden bar with large, eye-catching oil paintings by Mark Stock. It’s a place where a classic martini and your best manners seem appropriate.

Gitane, a relatively new restaurant and bar located on Claude Lane near Union Square, is decorated with French and Turkish influences such as smoky mirrors, hand printed wallpapers and interesting art. Also on Claude Lane is Café Claude, a very French place with live jazz on weekends and delicious onion soup gratinée day and night.
